Quarterly updates to HMRC are now required for many self-employed people and landlords. We set up your software and file every update for you.

If you're self-employed or a landlord, HMRC now wants your income and expenses sent four times a year from recognised software, then a final declaration after the year ends.

It's based on your total turnover from self-employment and property, before expenses. If you're over the threshold and haven't set it up, talk to us now. We'll set you up on Xero, or work with the software you already use, and file each update for you.

Questions

MTD questions

Do I need Making Tax Digital?

If your combined self-employment and property turnover was over £50,000, you should already be on it from April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. Send us your figures and we'll tell you where you stand.

Can you move my books to Xero?

Yes. Planet Accounting is a Xero migration specialist. We move your records from spreadsheets, Sage, QuickBooks or another system, check the opening balances, connect your bank feeds and show you how to use it.

I'm behind on my returns. Can you help?

Yes. We'll look at what you have, give you a fixed price to catch up, and deal with HMRC on your behalf. The sooner it's sorted, the smaller the penalties.

Did the 2026 Budget change Making Tax Digital?

The dates did not move: £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. HMRC is also easing late-submission penalty points in the first year, and other Budget changes affect landlords and sole traders. Read our Budget 2026 summary.
