Questions

Self assessment questions

I've never filed before. Where do I start?

You register with HMRC for a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). We do that for you, then collect your figures. Allow two to three weeks for the UTR to arrive, so don't leave it until January.

What if I'm behind by a year or more?

We file the missing years, work out what's owed or refundable, and appeal penalties where you have a reasonable excuse. Coming forward before HMRC chases you always ends better.

What are payments on account?

If your tax bill is over £1,000, HMRC asks you to pay half of next year's estimated bill in advance, on 31 January and 31 July. We'll explain exactly what you owe and when, and reduce them if your income has dropped.

Can you do it all on WhatsApp?

Yes. Send photos of receipts and statements, we send you the return to approve, you sign electronically. Most clients never visit the office.

Why monthly rather than a one-off?

Monthly is cheaper over the year and means you can message us any time, not just in January. One-off suits you if you just want this year done and dusted.

What did the 2026 Budget change for me?

The trading allowance rises to £3,000 and property and savings tax rates go up from April 2027, and Making Tax Digital reaches £30,000 turnover. Read our Budget 2026 summary.
